Bloom Where You’re Planted — Then Upgrade
Share
Learn how to balance gratitude and ambition. A guide for women entrepreneurs on using what you have now to build the success you deserve later.
We are often told that ambition is a restless energy. It’s painted as this constant, itching dissatisfaction with where we are, a burning need to be somewhere else, somewhere better, somewhere bigger. But what if true growth doesn’t start with escaping your current reality, but by mastering it?
This isn’t about settling. It’s about strategy. It’s about finding the balance where gratitude and ambition don’t just coexist—they fuel each other.
I remember staring at a laptop that was older than my car, sitting at a kitchen table that wobbled if I typed too hard. I had big dreams of an empire, of sleek offices and a team of brilliant women. But my reality was a slow internet connection and a budget of zero. It would have been easy to say, “I can’t start until I have X, Y, and Z.” Instead, I made a choice that changed everything. I chose to bloom where I was planted, knowing full well that I intended to transplant myself into a bigger garden the moment my roots were strong enough.
This is for the women entrepreneurs who feel stuck between where they are and where they want to be. Your current situation isn’t a cage; it’s your training ground.
The Myth That “More” Means “Better”
There is a pervasive lie in the business world that you need the best tools, the biggest investment, and the perfect circumstances to launch. We see Instagram feeds full of aesthetic workspaces and assume that success is impossible without them.
When we focus entirely on what we lack, we miss the incredible power of what we have. I call this the “Upgrade Trap.” It’s the belief that you can’t be professional without the expensive software, or you can’t be taken seriously without the high-end branding.
Here is the truth: Resources don’t create resourcefulness. If you can’t make it work with a little, you won’t know how to manage a lot.
Learning to succeed with gratitude means looking at your limited resources and asking, “How can I stretch this?” When I started, I didn’t have a marketing budget. I had a voice, a free social media account, and a genuine desire to connect. That constraints forced me to be creative, authentic, and personal—traits that money simply cannot buy.
Why Gratitude is a Business Strategy
Gratitude is often discussed in the context of wellness, but it is a fierce business strategy. When you are grateful for your current stage, you stop wasting energy on envy. You stop looking sideways at what other women entrepreneurs are doing and start looking down at the work in front of you.
• Gratitude clears your vision: Instead of seeing obstacles, you see assets.
• Gratitude attracts abundance: People want to work with leaders who value what they have.
• Gratitude builds resilience: When you appreciate the small wins, the long road to the big wins feels less exhausting.
Phase 1: Using What You Have Now
To bloom where you’re planted means maximizing your current potential. It is about digging deep into the soil you are standing on right now.
Early in my journey, I felt invisible. I wanted the stages, the interviews, the recognition. But I wasn’t there yet. I was “planted” in a small community with a handful of clients. So, I decided to treat those few clients like they were millions. I poured everything I had into serving them with excellence.
I didn’t wait for the upgrade to act like a CEO. I showed up to my wobbly kitchen table with the same discipline and focus I would have brought to a boardroom.
Taking Inventory of Your Hidden Assets
You have more than you think. If you feel like you are starting from zero, pause and take stock.
• Your Network: Who do you already know? Your first client might be a friend of a friend.
• Your Knowledge: What unique skills do you possess? You don’t need a degree to be an expert; you just need experience.
• Your Story: No one else has your perspective. That is your most valuable marketing asset.
• Your Time: If you don’t have money, you likely have sweat equity. Invest it wisely.
Success with gratitude starts here. It starts with saying, “This is enough for today.”
Phase 2: The Strategic Upgrade
Here is where the “growth mindset for women” truly kicks in. Blooming where you are planted does not mean staying there forever. You put down roots so you can absorb nutrients, grow strong, and eventually outgrow your pot.
The upgrade should happen when your current reality can no longer contain your success. It shouldn’t be an ego purchase; it should be a necessity born of growth.
I upgraded my laptop only when my old one literally could not process the volume of work I was doing. I moved into an office only when my team physically could not fit in my living room. Each upgrade felt like a victory because it was earned.
Signs It Is Time to Expand
How do you know when to pivot from “blooming” to “upgrading”?
1. Bottlenecks: You are turning away business because your current systems (or lack thereof) can’t handle the volume.
2. Diminishing Returns: Your DIY solutions are now costing you more in time than it would cost to hire a pro.
3. Vision Misalignment: Your brand looks like who you were, not who you are.
Expanding later allows you to scale sustainably. You aren’t building a house of cards; you are building a skyscraper on a bedrock of proven success.
Cultivating a Growth Mindset for Women
The journey from the kitchen table to the corner office is mental before it is physical. A growth mindset isn’t just about learning new skills; it’s about viewing challenges as essential parts of the process.
I have faced failures that felt like the end of the world. Projects flopped. Investments didn’t return. But because I had trained myself to value the journey, I didn’t see these as stop signs. I saw them as data.
Women often battle imposter syndrome, feeling like we need to be perfect before we can be seen. But the women I look up to—my own heroes—weren’t perfect. They were persistent. They understood that you don’t grow by knowing all the answers; you grow by being brave enough to ask the questions.
Affirmation for Your Journey
If you are reading this and feeling small, let me offer you this affirmation: You are exactly where you need to be to get to where you want to go.
Your current struggles are building the muscles you will need to carry the weight of your future success. Do not despise these days of small beginnings. They are the fire that refines you.
You are capable of building something magnificent. You have permission to be ambitious. You have permission to want more. And you have the power to get there by loving where you are right now.
The Legacy of the “Bloom”
When I look back at that young woman at the wobbly table, I don’t feel pity. I feel immense pride. She didn’t wait for permission. She didn’t wait for a handout. She took what she had and she made it work.
That is the hero’s journey. It isn’t about the magic sword or the sudden windfall. It’s about the grit, the grace, and the daily decision to show up.
We need more women who are willing to share the messy middle of their stories. We need to normalize the “before” pictures, not just the polished “afters.” When you commit to blooming where you are planted, you become a beacon for others. You show them that success isn’t a lightning strike; it’s a garden that you tend to, day after day.
So, look around you. Look at your tools, your talents, and your current reality. Say thank you. And then, get to work. Your upgrade is coming, but only if you master the now.
